Last Wednesday witnesses the revelation of the world first 3D camera for mobile by a well known Japanese electronics firm, SHARP. They also detailed the plan of starting its production before the end of 2010.

With the aspiration that the module would inspire the development of innovative tool for communication such as 3D video calls, it has been targeted specifically for smaller devices such as digital cameras, cell phones and smartphones. In developing this camera module, Sharp applies high-density mounting technology which has been acquired over long years of experience in camera module development to achieve a compact form.
The module incorporates functions to process the image data output by the left and right cameras, which includes Color Synchronizing Processing for adjusting color and brightness, Timing Synchronizing Processing for synchronizing the timing of the video signals, and Optical Axis Control Processing for positioning correction. Fast Readout Technology is also applied to rapidly transfers video data from the image sensor, enabling 3D images to be captured in high-resolution HD mode. The firm also reveals that the module is able to capture 3D footage at 720 pixel resolution. However, the sampling would only be available in July with mass production commencing later this year.
Despite SHARP’s unwillingness to mention the cost of the camera, a Current Analysis researcher predicted that it would not increase the prices of phones due to the practice of subsidization. If his prediction is correct, 3D video on the move will no longer be fictions.
SHARP has also revealed another mobile intention last month whereby they outlined plans on bringing glasses-less 3D viewing technology to mobile screens. This technology is said to could be used in Nintendo’s next DS handheld. It seems that these experiences will be delivered through LCD panels, even though it still reports displaying issues such as viewing angles and problems that depends on how the screen is positioned by the user.
