Yesterday, Microsoft Corp. released their biggest patch ever in order to fix several security issues in their products including the yet to be released Windows 7 OS. The release includes 13 security bulletins or patches to address 34 vulnerabilities identified across Windows, IE, Silverlight, Office and other programs. Six of the patches were said to be high priority and must be executed immediately. Meanwhile, several of the patches will affect their new OS i.e: Windows 7, which will be launched officially next week. These patches were designed to protect users from hackers or malicious software downloaded from the net.
Windows 7 has been used world wide currently in test versions. This early signs of vulnerabilities has worried the giant software maker as they hoped that this new OS would erase the bad feelings among their many customer who bought its predecessor, Vista. Asked whether the company had identified further security problems with Windows 7, their spoke person could not provide an immediate answer. Generally they wouldn’t disclose such problems until they are releasing its patches.
Dave Marcus, a senior researcher at McAfee Inc. said that the vulnerabilities in Windows 7 including the risk of having a PC taken over by a hacker were serious flaws. However it is but to be expected as “as long as human beings are writing code there are always going to be vulnerabilities,” he said.
Meanwhile, for the record yesterday’s update included the largest number of patches to be issued on a single day by Microsoft. A reminder for corporate users however, they need to test the patches before deploying them to make sure they do not cause machines to crash because of compatibility issues with existing software.
